CASE STUDY

Elysium Healthcare

At Elysium Healthcare, our focus is on supporting service users beyond the acute stage and into meaningful rehabilitation. As a Tissue Viability Nurse, I often work with individuals who have complex needs and have tried multiple solutions before finding what really works for them.

One such gentleman, living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), had become increasingly frustrated with mattresses. We had trialled everything available—foam, memory foam, hybrid and alternating air mattresses—but nothing gave him the comfort or support he needed. His skin integrity was at risk, his mobility was limited, and his overall wellbeing was suffering.

Thanks to Renray Healthcare and their partner Squirrel Medical, we were able to trial one of their Vestims 15cm active mattresses. This is a low profile twin chamber design to improve stability. The difference was immediate and sustained. Since receiving the mattress, I have not been called to his room once for mattress-related issues. On visiting, he made no negative comments—his only words when asked were: “Yeah, it’s alright.” For him, this was a huge step forward.

As he approached discharge, his greatest worry was returning home and facing more mattress trials. Knowing this mattress would be available at home gave him reassurance and peace of mind. Importantly, he found he could use a transfer board (previously a banana board) effectively with this mattress—something he had been unable to do on other alternating systems. This gave him independence at a time when his mobility was deteriorating, and he described it as a real help during his rehab journey.

The clinical outcomes were clear:

  • Improved sleep – he rested better throughout the night
  • Maintained skin integrity – no skin breakdown during the trial
  • Greater independence – successful transfers using the board
  • Emotional reassurance – reduced frustration and improved quality of life

On behalf of myself and the team at Elysium, I would like to thank Renray Healthcare and their partner Squirrel Medical for this trial. It has been an enormous relief for the patient and a support to the care team, helping us deliver on our shared mission of seeing service users progress, heal, and regain confidence in their daily lives.
